A Visual Journey

The choice to incorporate literal forms into my sculpture came shortly after moving to Atlanta in 1987. I gradually adopted a spare theatrical combination of familiar but juxtaposed objects that established a state of tension with one another. The use of diminished scale was at first, a practical consideration having to do with transport and exhibition. In subsequent work, I came to recognize the value in its analog scope and the way it could draw the viewer into another place and time. It was much like the compelling world of child’s play that I have revisited and enjoyed with my two sons in the past decade. While the content has shifted from an autobiographic perspective in my earlier work to something more allegoric and didactic, the themes of denial, dysfunction, and subversion remain consistent throughout. I continue to investigate the same fertile ground in my more recent commissioned work.
